Seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
